Common questions about the Swedish citizenship test
Short answer
The social studies test is only in Swedish. Not everyone needs to take it, as accepted grades can also show your knowledge and there are exceptions. The information was checked on 4 November 2026.
The official test is only in Swedish. This is why our chapter pages and practice test are in easy Swedish. Practice test (Swedish) · Read in Swedish
Is medborgarporten.se a government website?
No. The website is run by Akademius Förlag and is not part of UHR or Migrationsverket. Everything on the website is free, and we write our own practice questions.
Can I take the test in my native language?
No, the test is only in Swedish. The official study material Sverige i fokus (Sweden in focus) is also only available in Swedish, as text and audio.
Does everyone have to take the test?
No. The knowledge requirement normally applies to people aged 16–66, but accepted grades can also show your knowledge. Stateless people born in Sweden who are under 21 and Nordic citizens who use the citizenship notification process are exempt. Exceptions may also be made because of a disability or other personal circumstances.
Are my grades or my civic orientation course enough?
Pass grades in social studies or basic social subjects from certain types of education can replace the test. It is unclear whether the civic orientation course for newcomers can be accepted; it is not among the qualifications listed by Migrationsverket. A pass in the highest course in sfi (Swedish for immigrants) is listed as a qualification for Swedish, not for social studies.
How can I register for the test?
You must first receive an anvisningsbrev (referral letter) from Migrationsverket. When registration is open, you register through an account on medborgarskapsprovet.uhr.se. You cannot register late or through medborgarporten.se.
Can I register without electronic ID?
Yes. If you do not have BankID or Freja eID, use your personnummer (personal identity number) and the personal code in your anvisningsbrev.
When and where is the next test?
The next social studies test is planned for April–May 2027. The exact date and place have not been decided, and registration is closed.
How much does the official test cost?
For tests held from 2027, the fee is 2 000 kronor per test, paid to UHR. Stateless people with a refugee status declaration or a travel document from a Swedish authority do not have to pay the fee.
What ID do I need on test day?
You need a valid Swedish identity document with a Swedish personnummer: an id-kort (ID card) from Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency), a Swedish driving licence or a Swedish SIS-marked id-kort. Foreign passports, electronic ID and expired documents are not accepted. Also bring your printed kallelse (test invitation).
Can the test be adapted to my needs?
If you have a disability, you can apply for adjustments such as extra time, larger text or a test setting adapted to your needs. You usually need a certificate, places are limited, and UHR assesses each application individually.
How many questions are there, and how much time do I get?
The trial test in August 2026 had 60 questions, of which 40 counted towards the score. The pass mark was 28 out of 40 points. The number of questions, time allowed and pass mark for 2027 have not been published. Each question has four possible answers and one correct answer, and you do not lose points for wrong answers.
Do I need to send in my result, and how long is it valid?
UHR sends the result automatically to Migrationsverket, so you do not need to send it yourself. Passing the test does not automatically give you citizenship, as other requirements are also checked. It is unclear how long the result is valid: this is not stated in the regulation or on UHR's pages about the test.
What happens if I do not pass?
You may be allowed to take the test again, but you need to contact Migrationsverket for a new referral. You must register again each time you take the test.
When will the Swedish language test be available?
The date set by law for the reading and listening test is 1 October 2027, or earlier if the government decides. However, UHR recommends autumn 2029 and believes speaking and writing tests will be possible in 2030 at the earliest. The timing is uncertain: the government had not decided on a new date as of 4 November 2026. The Swedish language requirement still applies. For now, you show your knowledge through accepted grades or other qualifications.
